Is normal for it to open when lights go off and close with lights on?

Not particularly but yours doesn't look closed in the picture

Your rock flower is large at night, looks healthy. Mine closes up at night and get a lot smaller.

Typical RFA behavior. I have some that stay open 24/7, and some that close, or rather shrink up(not fully close) during the day. Yet are fully open with the lights off at night.

No idea what makes some do this and others stay open. All mine are on the sandbed where the rock meets the sand. All are 100% healthy as I have spawing events a couple times a year, and always have babies.

I only initially bought 3, I now have upwards of 15, with many small(smaller then a dime) babies floating around at any given time.

reviving thread...
came to ask the same question. I have 2 RFAs both skrunch up during the day and open up fully at night. Both are in sand bed (put them on rock but they had other ideas. My issue is they get sand in there mouths sometimes they dont get it all out

onother question is should i be feeding them at night then? they do grab it during the day but during the day they often have sand covering alot of them almost like they tuck themselves into the sand a bit
