I just bought a large (3”) rock flower a few days ago. Last night I was showing it off to my daughters boyfriend and this morning it has disappeared. I only have one peppermint shrimp and one cleaner shrimp, had not bothered the nem since I put it in the tank. Any thoughts as to what may have happened to it? Here it is just last night

I did a water change a month after I bought two and blew off the rocks with a turkey baster. After the water change I noticed one was MIA and thought I sucked it up with my python without realizing it. Low and behold it dug itself deep into my live rock for a month and a half. Judging by your pictures, there doesn't appear to be LR close by where it can do that.

Dont freak out itll show up...nems are weird and disappear all the time. Only to poke back out days later...i have like 20 rfas and every once in awhile one will tuck way back in its spot and get me all worried...btas are worse...lol

This hobby is full of frustrations which is why most dont stay...:( but as long as you take it slow and research along the way it will be very rewarding!
Ron reefman likes to get his rfas to set foot in a pvc endcap in the sand and he swears they never move on him. Then pushes the cap in the sand so u cant see it. Gives them a sense of security. They can hide...which they like to do...;)

How long has your tank been set up? What type of live rock do you have - dry, aquacultured, cured rock from an LFS? What over fish and CUC do you have besides the two shrimp?

There are a number of things that may be going on...

It could have moved itself to your rock and found a crevice to hole up in until it acclimates to your tank.

It may have curled/balled itself up do to a little bit of shock from the transition into the new tank and been blown by the current into a crevice or cave and be resting on the sand floor somewhere within the rock where you can't see it.

It may have been eaten by something during the night. (I had one disappear on it's 5th night. Found the remains floating on the sand within my rockwork a couple days later. Turns out a nickle-sized polyclad flatworm hitchhiked in on my aquacultured rock and came out at night to eat it.)

The best thing you can do is to just wait and watch. It will either turn up, or it won't. Whatever you do, don't start shifting rock work or stirring up sand in a panicked effort to find it. It will only cause stress for the rest of your tank and possible harm to the nem if it's in hiding and you inadvertently damage while digging around.

Thank you for the support, I’m gun shy because I keep trying new things and a lot of the time I am not successful, I’m starting to get frustrated.

Hang in there Jennie. It takes a little time and can indeed feel a bit frustrating at first. But as you begin to get more and more of a feel for you tank ... and feel less and less pressured to try and control every little thing taking place inside it ... it becomes very enjoyable. And in a way, the tank/nature seems to almost take of itself.

My tank has been up and running for two years this March. I have cured live rock from my lfs. I have two clowns, a transparent goby, a dwarf angel, and a small yellow tang. My cleanup crew is a emerald crab, a fighting conch, sand sifting star, turbo snails, and a number of blue legged hermits. The only thing I have added in over three or four months was the rock flower nem and that was now four nights ago he stayed in the same spot till last night when he disappeared. Thank!

It’s back! Gone all day yesterday and this morning he was right where I put him five days ago.. Sneeky little guy. Thank you to all that told me to basically be patient, I had a moment of

I think we all go through that. Years ago, we found we could not keep mandarins, clams, or anemones. No matter what we did, they died. I now have a blue max clam thriving and a tank dedicated to anemones and clowns (I haven’t tried the mandarin). Time, technology, patience and knowledge have made all the difference!

My rose bubble tip anemone moved about a week ago. I freaked out. Since then I found him in a different spot every day. Just checking out the real estate I guess. I'm glad your friend came back -- he's beautiful.
