Alright everyone im looking for cheap good rock that I can use for my tank. I found this rock online and it says $1.49 for 40lbs so im assuming that it is only $1.49 + shipping for 40lbs. Are they charging by the pound? Is this good rock?

post a link. I cant see the pic lol but its normally 1.60+ per pound so chances are its not 1.49 for 40 pounds

Sorry lol I posted the thread without a picture.

1.49 per pound;)

Ahh danget I thought it was $1.49 for 40lbs. Is this a good deal? Is this good rock?

if youre going to get base you might as well order from http://reefrocks.net/ they have awesome rock and are cheaper (free shipping) I would suggest going with a higher quality live rock though so you get all the fauna that comes with it. you can buy mature live rock from local reefers for 1-2 bucks a pound.

Thank you. What is the best kind? Suggestions?

really any kind that's matured will work great. the rest is mostly on looks and weight. a lot like Fiji, a lot like pukani, in the end my goal is to cover it with coral so looks don't matter lol but if I had to pick, I would say pukani.

Thank you. Im just wanting to get the 30lbs I need and and to get it set up.

best best would be local reefers. check facebook for local reefer groups and check craigslist. if its not in their main system, or not in a freshly tore down system I wouldn't buy it as live rock. when you get it you want toinspect it. look for pods, sponges, purples greens yellows. if theres a bit of algae on it that's fine. but it should definitely look old.

yeah, aquacultered live rock is great. they take dry rock, set it out on "leased" areas of the oceans or gulf of mexico and let it sit there and mature. that's the best route.

Ok thank you. What is the usual price range?

a lot. if youre on a budget you probably cant afford it lol ive seen it go from 8 a pound to 20 a pound, plus has to be 2 day shipping

marco, reefrocks, and billy hay rock are all the exact same rock. absolutely no differences as they all come from the same mine. so find the one who will give you what you want, and order from them. ask for pictures if you like. theyre all closely enough priced that it wouldn't make a difference.

Thank you. Which one do you use?

ive used them all. billy is a good guy and will do his best to find what you want, reefrocks was a good experience, they actually cut one of the rocks flat for me, and marco is just another company but theyre not bad either.

starting with dry rock isn't bad, but you miss out on a lot of stuff like the fauna. itll come eventually as you add frags but it takes longer. everything takes longer.

Ok thank you I have a 29 gallon biocube and I just wanted to know what to use.

I would try to source live rock locally first. even if it comes with a few pests its nothing you cant take care of.
