Rock question

i got this rock with a used tank I bought. I used it in my macro algae tank for about 5 months. It never gets coralline algae on it and I'm wondering is it's not good rock to use in a saltwater tank. Here is some pictures. Thanks for the help

That rock does not look like it's made of calcium carbonate, the rock was not naturally part of a reef. Personally I feel for the investment we make to our tanks it's not worth risk to include a rock that may or may not contain heavy metals or minerals that are not tolerated by marine inverts. Just my personal preference. Hobbyist have used rock found in creeks or lakes without issue, but I would not.

Personally for the amount of money we pump into this hobby I find rock to be something I wouldn't cheap out on. I personally just spent $300 on rock for a new tank build just because of the beauty a good rock can give to the tank. Plus why take chances just to save a few $100 :\

I agree with everyone else. If you want to save money, you can start with dry coral rock. It takes awhile to become live, but once it does, it will function as well as live rock.

If you chip it it should be similar to aragonite and pretty easily Id'd.
You can pour or soak it in vinegar to test if it indeed coral skeleton. Aragonite will react by fizzing or forming crystals. most others will not.

Thank u everyone. I did take it out of the tank because I'm going put a pair of clowns in the tank. I'm not going to use it. Maybe someone with a fw tank will take it.
