I notice that no one puts rock in there qt. When I got my live rock I had a lot of little rocks that came with it. nothing I would use in my tank. there more like pebble size. I never planned on using them in the DT since they were way to small. I had so many that I felt a few would benefit the QT and help cycle it. I never took them out. I'm I hurting anything by keeping them in there?

Is it a quarantine tank for coral and inverts? Or a quarantine tank for fish?

From this thread by the resident genius regarding medication/fish disease/quarantine: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/

"Substrate and rock are best avoided in QT, as those can absorb many medications. However, one or two small pieces of live rock may be added for ammonia control, so long as they are coming from a disease free tank. The live rock will need to be removed once a disease is spotted and before medications are used. Furthermore, the live rock must be considered “contaminated” once exposed to a fish disease, and left in a fallow (fish free) environment for 72 days to starve out any parasites. Or alternatively, sterilize it using a mild bleach solution; after a thorough rinsing & drying period, it can be reused as “dry rock.”"

I, personally, am getting ready to set up a coral/invert QT, so am still doing my research on that, but it seems that a small amount of sand/live rock in that tank will be good. You would never dose medication in a coral/invert tank (treat individual corals, not blanket like you would a fish), so you don't have to worry about LR and sand absorbing medication. Having LR/sand will also help keep the coral/invert tank more stable and cycled. Am I thinking this correctly @Humblefish ?

I just go a 20 long from Petco today. haven't brought it in yet. have to find a spot. I might put it in my office on a desk. I just have to clean it off and reinforce it in the middle to handle the wait. but it should be good enough for a 20 long. I don't plan on a skimmer for it. just a HOB filter. and a wave maker. and heater, then probably 1 oeice of rock and some sand. but nothing else after that. I'm gonna keep corals and a few annemones in it...and a few clown fish...

For a quarantine tank, or new display tank? If it is a quarantine tank, my understanding is you should have separate ones for fish and coral/inverts. If you keep 1 QT, and a fish gets ich, you cannot treat a tank that has corals/inverts, because copper kills them. So you have 1 for fish that you can treat with copper and fish medication, and 1 for observing coral for coral pests, or allowing corals to release ich tomonts, and such.

I just dip my corals in bayer and then I have a storage bin that I keep them in for a few weeks before the corals go into the DT. I just have 1 QT for the fish. then if I have to dose the qt with ich-x or anything else. after that treatment they go into a second storage bun until I clean it with a mild bleach and water mix. then I refill it with new salt water and raise the temp. then they go back in there.

Below is a pic of my coral/invert QT. Frags that will be going into my DT are on the rack on top, junk corals on bottom. :p
