I'm going to try bare bottom on my new 180 sps build. I am considering placing the rocks directly on the glass bottom. I know some use starboard; however, my wife did a fantastic job of painting the bottom (outside of course) to make it look like sand and I'd hate to cover it up.

Thoughts?

There should be nothing wrong with placing the rock directly on the glass i would make sure to export pieces together and make the structures as solid as possible so that you reduce or eliminate the risk of rocks falling onto the class.. you should be fine though

I have put rocks directly on glass, I have also ordered 1" square cut starboard to put under the rocks to elevate them a little and protect the bottom. I rather liked using the 1" square chunks. I think were .375 thick. You can't see the small squares with rock on them.

I sand down the parts that touch to reduce the psi of each point into the glass. And gives it a solid stand

This. The way I did it, is I took the base rocks outside, put them on a very flat cement walkway and just filed them down. Then you can wash them with saltwater to remove any dirt.
