Are there any rocks that are sold in the aquarium hobby, that need to be avoided. I need some shelf rock.

There isn't so much rock to be avoided as there is to just prepare for some rocks after you get them. If you are buying rocks outright from a retailer: With base rock I would at least do a wash out to get and debris off the surface of the rocks. There can be anything from dust or some minor contaminants from shipping or processing. Live rock is a lot more iffy as you just never know what life is actually on it... it could be all good like coralline, macro algaes, heck even some coral if you're lucky, but there could also be some bad things like parasites, bad algaes, disease, etc. You run the risk regardless of who you buy from as just about all live rock that I am aware of is cultured in some part of the ocean.

You said you needed shelf rock, and off the top of my head I can only think of two options: Either Marco Rocks (MarcoRocks Aquarium Products - Shelf) or Ceramic rock (Aquaroche Reef Plates | Aquarium Specialty).

I would realistically try to stay with the type of rock you already have in your display (Assuming you have rock in there already). My only problem with just about any shelf rock is the issue of placement. You can't really attach shelf rock easily to a location in your tank without needing to do something more permanent, like reef-safe putty.. or something to that effect.

Do you have a picture of your tank and location for this shelf rock, so I can give you better ideas of how to accomplish your task?

I have about 130 pounds of Fiji live rock. I haven't bought any rock since my first install 6 years ago. All my rock is drilled and pegged with acrylic rods so aquascaping is easy. I'll try to get a pic up.
