Does anyone have suggestions for a way to make a rockscape stable in an established aquarium? I have had mine up and running for almost 4 months now and my watchman goby has destroyed my rockscape twice in 3 weeks.

I am not sure when he sleeps. He is always working sifting the sand and digging out under the rocks anytime of the day or night. I think he is holding a grudge from his first couple of days I had him. I built my rockscape on top of a 3 pieces or PVC pipe for extra hiding places and safe areas for my fish. 2 of the pieces of PVC run along the entire back of my tank (29 gallon cube) leaving maybe 6" on either side for access into the pipe. Within a couple of hours of being placed in the tank he was piling sand in front of all 4 openings until you couldn't see the openings any longer. But he had a place where he could dart into the pipes so he was happy. So I gently raked the sand away from the openings and he immediately covered them back and I uncovered them again. He has not tried to cover them since, but he has done nothing but sift sand since. At first I wasn't too concerned, I just tried to place the rocks back where they were. But now I have 2 small clown gobies and I am concerned he may cause the rocks to shift and crush one of them when they are perching or hiding in the rocks. I feed the watchmen brine shrimp every other day and when I feed my clowns garlic flakes he eats those too. So I think he is getting enough food.

I know some folks have drilled holes and used plastic hangers pieces to hold them together when they were starting their tanks, but I am not sure how good of an idea that would be in an existing tank.

My wife thinks we should move the rocks around so we dont have them stacked on each other so he can't cause them to move.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Unless your rocks are all shaped like baseballs you should be able to make a stable structure by stacking them so that they lock together more or less. It still takes me a lot of time to properly aquascape a new tank and I have been doing it for years. Mucho patience is needed to get it right so that it will stay stable for years.

And make sure the base rocks are resting on the bottom of the tank and not just pushed into the sand.

We have a pair of snapping shrimp (and some of their young now) and they are master builders. They have dug out under the rocks very thoroughly, but they reinforce their work, and it is frankly amazing. I mention this because watchmen bond with these shrimp, and it would make him stop digging (most likely) and take up his 'watchman' role. Otherwise, gel super glue. LOADS of it.
