Hello again, Randy!!

I want to re-do all my rockwork when the leasing office is done messing with my flooring. I bought a bunch of CaribSea rocks of all different shapes from Supreme Reefs (LFS).

I'm running a modified ZEOvit and Aquaforest system. I use a good amount of zeolites, and use an auto-shaker.

I found an early post where you said that zeolites probably do not absorb as much ammonia as one'd expect.

In that case, is it necessary to grow nitrifying bacteria on these new rocks? Or only denitrifying bacteria?

I was intending on doing this using ammonia dosed to a container with the rocks, plus an assortment of bacteria. For denitrifying bacteria, I'd dose nitrate and phosphate using the normal ways you taught, plus vinegar and sulfate.

PS -- I decided I'm not an enormous fan of Phosphat-E. I thought it wasn't working because phosphates kept getting to around 0.50 .. I'd dose around 250 mL on a 40 gal system. The alkalinity dropped the upper 5's (dKH). I guess that's not their fault. User error. Going forward, I plan to get phosphate before it's a problem. After that, vinegar dosing plus my ClearWater scrubber. I'll run the biopellets until they're gone (these are the free ones). Unfortunately, I bought 3 things of Phosphat-E plus a Spa cleaner solution (which doesn't lower alk, says a reviewer on Amazon.com).. I'll dose maybe 5-10 mL/day until they're gone.

.. This will all interfere with our scientific study! Too many confounding variables if I use too much Phosphat-E.

All I can say is your rock will colonize with bacteria from the tank. Curing them is something you can do prior to placement in your DT.
