Doing a bit of reading last night I dropped on a very interesting topic about bacteria in pure water .
It seems that even though we may make 0TDS water , that water can still contain many forms of bacteria . Labs apparently run UV or 03 post production .
My question to you brainiacs out there is this something we hobbyists need to be wary of as I have never come across anyone needing to run UV or ozone post production .
Is the bacteria in RO something that can survive in salt water ? could this be the cause of many mysterious cases of cyano etc?

Yes, there can be bacteria in our systems, especially between the RO and the DI.

For that reason I do not recommend drinking the water unless you frequently sterilize the system, or use something liike a UV to sterilize the product water.

But for use in a reef tank, there's no reason to be concerned about these bacteria. Some may survive, but our tanks have massive numbers of bacteria, and more are coming in all the time from foods, the air, water changes, your hands, new creatures brought in, etc.

I drink from a jug and never clean it out. Gross? Perhaps! Bacteria? Absolutely! I also sometimes fill my jug with my RODI water just cause its out on the kitchen counter. I believe our bodies get stronger with exposure so why limit the exposure. Keep in mind, I work in a busy ED so I'm around nasty all the time, no fear of pathogens here……okay I do fear some pathogens! :D
