Hello I purchased a bunch of filters a long time ago and am replacing my current filters. This one in my box isn't balled and doesn't look like my existing carbon filter. Does anyone recognize this filter, is it carbon or something else? When I shake it, it sounds like something granular inside but not sure if its carbon or something for chloromin.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Looks like a granular activated carbon filter

Looks like a carbon block to me as well. Would be nice to know the micron size. Not sure if it's universal, but here are the colors and sizes of carbon blocks I have now......

Purple 0.6 micron
Blue 1.0 micron
White 5.0 micron

It might be a moot point.....How many carbon blocks are in your RO unit? If only one, that's the one I'd use.

carbon block filters have a better contaminant removal capacity than GAC filters.

I only have the one and I would be using this in place of the extruded carbon filter that was previously in my 4 stage system. Based on your comment crabs this carbon block filter is a better option than the extruded ones?

Here's my story......I never took note of the "extruded" part and just looked at the labels on the filters I have......a MatrikX brand. Not a mention of extruded on the label. However, when I go to their website, they state that the MatrikX brand is all extruded carbon.

And, when I shake them, silent. So if you can hear granules bouncing around inside that filter, I'm guessing it's GAC (granulated activated carbon).

I'm not going to copy it all, but here's info off the website:

Extruded Carbon Block Or GAC?

The workhorse filter is manufactured from high purity acid-washed activated carbon. Its dirt-holding capacity and absence of carbon fines makes this carbon block the filter of choice. A superior carbon block, combines both high performance and integrity with an exceptional cost-to-performance value. As a result, the extruded carbon blocks virtually renders GAC filters obsolete by comparison.

Standard filters are finished with an outer polypropylene spunbonded prefiltration medium. A protective polypropylene netting is applied to the exterior of the cartridge. Polypropylene end caps with compression gaskets fit most standard housings.

MATRIKX® carbon block filters consist of activated carbon particles fused into a uniform block with enhanced adsorptive capacity and efficiency. MATRIKX carbon block filters flow in a radial (outside-to-inside) direction, providing increased dirt capacity and low pressure drop. Unlike granular activated carbon (GAC) filters, MATRIKX® carbon block cartridges will not channel or bypass due to the extreme uniformity of their extruded activated carbon core. Service life of the MATRIKX® carbon block filter is greatly extended by a layer of 15 µm polypropylene spunbonded prefiltration medium.

  • No Channeling
  • No Fluidizing
  • No Bypassing
  • Eliminates Release of Carbon Fines
  • Lowest extractables, pure materials of construction
  • Maximum service life and resistance of construction
  • Manufactured using FDA - Compliant materials
blah, blah, blah....

Ah ok. My filter is definitely GAC. I can hear the carbon when I shake it. I will just make sure to replace it a little sooner than I would have.
