Hi I'm just starting to plan my first tank and I know I'm going to need to get an RODI filter.

Other than local water parameters what guidelines do you use for sizing and selecting a filter?

I would get a 5 stage and if you have water pressure under 50, I would get a booster pump.
3 pre filters, 1 RO ,1 DI

What about GPD? Should it have a relation to tank size or does it not matter as much as long as I've got sufficient water storage?

Depends on how fast you want to make water.
I have a 600g and make 65 gallons a week for water change
I use a 150 gpd.

You look at what size tank you will have and what your planned water needs will be - water changes and top off. Also what kind of storage facility you will have available. Just realize you can start with the 75gal or 90 gal one and then add another membrane down the road or even switch out that membrane to increase the gpd. The canisters are all standard sizes for the most part.
