hey guys.... i have a 5 stage rodi from BRS and i have changed all filters, check valve and the shut off valve. i have my rodi running into a 40g drum (which is also connected to a 240g system.... and its split and runs direct to my sump return chamber. when everything is full it keeps producing waste. do you think since its running direct into the sump it always opens the valve and waste is produced. i ran my waste line into the washing machine to see how much im wasting.... i filled the machine with 5 hours!!!!!!

From my knowledge (I have the same unit), when your good line (blue) flow has stopped, all water will divert to the waste line. I have seen people hook their RO/DI systems directly to their ATO/sump, but typically when you're just creating water for changes/top offs, you would have the blue line going into a bucket of some sort.

I have mine going into 2 Brute totes with float valves in each. When the float valve is lifted, water stops coming out of the line, but the system doesn't completely shut off, waste line still runs since it is an open avenue for the water to flow through. The auto stop valve that BRS puts on their RO/DI systems is a safeguard for this exact situation, to prevent overflow of the tote/sump/ATO, but I dont think it necesarilly stops the systemy completely (hence your waste line still runs).

Best bet would be to check with BRS to ensure this is proper function, but I can say that my RO/DI system works the same way as you described.

if your looking to do something along these lines your best bet would be to use a float Switch in your storage container connected to a charged normally closed solenoid valve.
that way when your container is full the float switch would disengage and turn off your solenoid cutting off the water supply to your RO/DI unit and thus the waste water as well.
you can do this with a few parts from autotopoff.com I think it is, they sell the solenoids and you would just connect it to the skimmer overflow float switch.

where would the check valves be in this setup?

Are you sure the auto shut off valve is hooked up correctly? When the float valves are triggered cutting off product water to your reservoir, back pressure should build in the ASOV cutting off flow to the membrane thereby eliminating flow out of the waste water line as well.

Here’s an old BRS video detailing ASOV installation and how it works.

I stopped using ASOV's because I found them unreliable. I'd often get issues with the system still producing waste. Instead I switched to a solenoid on the water input with an avast marine pressure switch on the output. When my reservoir fills up, it just cuts the supply off entirely. No supply, no waste.

My BRS unit works like a charm. When I'm not running RO, I'm not running waste water. This should work/be fixable, but a simple solution as a failsafe is to insert a Guest-type ball-valve right before water enters the unit. This way if you ever want to, you can shut-off water before it enters the unit, eliminating waste water.

Why not put the ASOV on the "supply" line instead of the waste line?
