So I know my rodi water comes out at 0ppm but after adding my buffers I'm looking at over 1700 ppm. Is that normal?

Typically we don't measure TDS once we've added salt, kalk, etc. to RODI water. You're only measuring the RODI water coming out of the unit to make sure it's pure (since you're getting 0 PPM you know you're good there). There's not much value in measuring the TDS once you start adding stuff (at least not in the context of our hobby).

What buffers are you adding? Is this for topoff water or water changes?

I'm using that reef buffer by seachem 8.3 I just added it for the first time so idk if I should add a little with every water change our what.

I'm not sure why you'd add a buffer to it unless you are just using it as a delivery method for an alk additive, but yes, that is normal for nearly any supplement added to RO/DI water. They contain ions that conduct electricity and show up in a ppm TDS test by conductivity.

Only add it if the reef tank is lower than you want in alkalinity. :)

Ignore the nonsensical pH claims of the product, and never dose it based on pH needs.
