I bought a used rodi unit from a guy and said it hasn’t been used much well I tested my water and i got 11 tds so I ordered all new filters di resin and a ro membrane. The di resin has only changed colors about a 1/3 of the way. Should I go ahead and change it or wait till the rest has changed colors? Also once I change everything out how long should I let it run before I get good water? I ordered a tds meter but didn’t realize it’s coming from China so I don’t have it yet. I’ll probably take a sample by a lfs to make sure I have 0 tds.

There's no reason to throw out the resin if it's not depleted. I only purge enough water through the system to ensure there is no visible tint from activated carbon dust.

How long did the ro/di system sit idol? It's advisable to flush water thru your system at least every 2 weeks, even if not making water. If the system sat idol for a long time, i would change out all of the filters, including di resin. Also, if the system doesn't have a flush valve, it is highly suggested to get one; your filters will last longer. gl

I make water for my auto top off and water change every week and have been battling algae and I think this is where it coming from. I’ll leave the di resin that’s in there for now and just change the filters and membrane.

I just recently took a sample to a local lfs to get that reading. I’ve been battling some kind of algae and suspected it was my water.
I'm sorry. What I meant was, how long did you let the water run out through the system before sampling for TDS?

Also, what kind of container did you use for the sample?

I just poured some from my auto top off jug. I used a small Tupperware container.

Whenever I start making DI water, there is a surge of TDS that takes a few minutes to abate. The surge is longer right water filter changes or other maintenance.

I have a TDS meter on my water unit and a portable $10 unit I picked up off of Amazon for spot checks or troubleshooting. I wouldn't go crazy with changes until you can confirm that reading your got the from the fish store.

I already have the new filters so I’m going to go ahead and change them. The sediment filter looks brown.

So are you saying every time I make water I should let it run a little bit then test to make sure it’s 0 tds before I start using it? I’m still learning.

What about the RO membrane will that go bad if not in use or if left without flushing for a couple years ??
