I did try using the search button first. And saw some helpful info, but not enough. Can someone recommend a thread or website to take me through setting up an rodi system so I can make my own saltwater.

Thank you in advance

Hope this helps! It should come with complete instructions including part list and step by step setup. If it didn't come with everything you need, you can source pieces pretty easily.

@Buckeye Hydro is a great source of supplies and information. Check out their website.

When I was in the market for mine, I did as much online research as I could and ended up confusing myself with all the choices. I was ready to pull the trigger but still had questions. I had chosen Buckeyehydro because they are in-state for me. I sent off an email question at about 9:00 on a Saturday morning expecting an answer sometime the next week. About 10AM my phone rand, and it was Russ from BH (the owner). He spent the next 45 minutes on the phone with me, and not only answered all my questions, he had convinced me that what I needed was not what I thought and custom designed exactly what I needed. He ended up saving me a couple hundred dollars in the process!

If you want a quality rodi at a competitive price that comes with unmatched customer service, look no further.

Oh - and he had my customized unit to my door Tuesday.

Do you mind if I ask you how much the custom one cost?

I was expecting to pay ~$400 (I thought I needed all the bells and whistles) and Russ got it to me for just under $200.

I don't even bother looking elsewhere for replacement cartridges. Even if someplace else has a similar product at a similar price, my hard earned cash goes to BH - IMHO, the quality of the service is something that you just can't put a price on.

Here is the setup i built.

Im using the Marine Depot 4 Stage with TDS Monitor. Vectra S2 pump to recirculate and transfer water. Other than that, all the PVC and valves came from Lowes. The lower tank is my RO/DI water and the top tank is for mixing salt water. I can transfer from both tanks to my sump. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Does that expense only include the RODI system that they recommend, or all of the setup equipment as well (i.e. containers, pumps, etc.)?

Thanks

That is for the rodi setup with filters, tubing to hook it up to your source water, and whichever option you use to connect it with.

No pumps needed if you have decent water pressure. I do use a mag18 to move the water from my storage/mixing barrel in the basement to the DT on the main floor. You storage container size is determined by your available space, actual water change volume expected, and your wallet. I use a 55g drum that I got for free where I work - it contained Radiographic developer or fixer - a good scrubbing and it's been fine for 30 years. You can easily find similar barrels on craigslist in the $10-$20 range. Others use Brute trashcans. If it's a small tank, a 5g bucket may be enough. I know of others that have very large (100g+) containers bought specifically for their water changes but those tend to cost more.
