Hi all. This is my first post on R2R, although you've been a great help throughout my 2year reefing experience. I'm setting up my new BRS 6-stage water-saver RODI with a booster pump and an optical pure water shut-off. I was wondering about the BRS flush valve. In the factory configuration, will particles from my new charcoal canisters bypass the membranes upon initial startup or do I need to install a tee and valve to the waste, before the membranes?

I’m not sure about the brs 6 stage. They may have a video on it on their site

But really just wanted to say welcome to you and glad you posted.

Let’s bump this up to get more advice and hellos #WelcometoR2R

I would unplug the line after the last cartridge, and run that down a drain or something. Then reconnect and disconnect the di stage, run that for a while. Don't recall how long, but several galons of production gets pitched if I recall. A valve there to bleed of a tds spike can be helpful in your di resin lasting longer.

Brs should have some good info or videos on getting it going.
And welcome to the boards !

Thank you both. They didn't leave much extra tubing to facilitate uncoupling and recoupling. I think I'm going to install a longer piece with a valve and tee to drain before the RO membrane. I also will flush before the resin to get rid of RORO preservatives and make DI resins last longer. Thanks again.

My rodi had the flush on the waste lineexiting the ro filter. The waste line typically has a flow restrictor and the flush just bypasses that resterictor and dumps the pressure. Is this different on a brs system ?

You are correct. BRS's is the same. I guess the only way to flush new charcoal canisters is to disconnect before RO, or install an alternative means of sending this to drain. I've emailed BRS and am waiting for their reply. I'm thinking of adding a TDS meter before membranes, as well. Would this help detect the end of sediment or charcoal canister life? Or, do you simply look for a drop at pressure gauge? Sorry for all the questions. Never had a RODI and may be over thinking this.

I installed my system a few days ago. I also have a boost pump (set to 70-80 psi depending on well pressure).

When you flush the system the valve bypasses the flow restrictor . That dumps the pressure out the waste and now it can’t force water through the RO membrane . Water just flows around it. That is how it “rinses” the RO membrane.

I flushed my System for 15 min to rinse everything out. I then ran my system in normal mode for another 15 min with the DI removed (to get rid of the RO additives). I have a duel tds meter. My input tds is 526 and my output just after the RO (and before DI) is between 0 and 4 now. Any fine charcoal after that process has got to be minimal. I will be interested in their reply. They are good at getting back to you.

if i were you, i would move the incoming tds probe to after the membrane, and have one after the di (looking at the pictures makes it look like some effort to do that)

Thanks. I will let you know what they say

I use a hand held tds in the bucket. I may upgrade to a three point TDS some day. (Honestly I may not look at it much since I can see the DI color. So spot checks should be good).

Moving probes would be a PIA

per that, they just run it as normal, for 60 minutes. no mention of flushing anything,
could be i make more work for myself. lol sorry if i led you wrong.

i would take the di offline, until your hour is up, not mandatory, but i bleed off the tds spike, so this could be similar.
looks like a nice unit,

As that link is from BRS, I will follow their instructions. Sometimes I over think things. I appreciate everyone's assistance.

I would never run a carbon block with out rinsing it first. I am surprised BRS does not recommend that.

Reading those instruction reminded me that I also discarded the first 10 gallons as well.
