So while picking up an urchin from a kind reefer nearby he suggested I stop buying premixed salt from my LFS and just get an RODI unit as it's far cheaper in the long run. If any of you mix your own water using an RODI unit, what kind of RODI unit do you use? And what is your favorite salt? I am thinking of using Fritz RPM if I do get my own unit.

I use the Bulk Reef Supply 5 stage RO/DI unit. Buy the premium right away as it comes with a pressure gauge and a TDS meter so you know you're getting pristine water. And then I mix it with Reef Crystals salt 1/2 cup per gallon of water. If you have bad water where you're located you can also do the 6 stage kit. Where I live the water is around 300-350 TDS, and after the 5 stage it comes out 0.

I recently picked up a spectrapure unit during a sale that I really like, but I also hear good things from BRS and BuckeyeHydro. I do wonder how much of a saving there would be from buying the canisters and filters separately.

I've been using Fritz for awhile now and have been happy with it. It's close to my target parameters and it seems to mix well so I have no complaints thus far.

The guy who I was with today actually had a spectrapure laying on the ground and said he didn't like it, but he also did say he got it second hand so it may have been a little overused by the time he got it. Thank you for your input, I think I'll go with BRS or spectrapure if I hear other good stuff about it

I've seen the BRS ones and they seem pretty nice, I'm considering getting it. It is VERY expensive though, I don't need nearly the 75GPD one which is the lowest I can find

It is more on the expensive side, but worth it in my opinion. And as far as the 75 gallon per day, how much are you making at a time? I noticed with mine I only make 6 gallons a week, and I went from a cheap ebay 50 gallon per day to the 75, and I like it so much more, my water is done sooner and I can get my salt mixing :)

Those are the three that I see recommended the most, I will add that the support from spectrapure has been excellent. They answered all of my questions when I was considering an rodi unit and that's something that is important to me. But then again BRS support is also excellent, and I heard the same goes for buckeyehydro so I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I guess it depends on what you need and budget. First thing I did was actually find out what's in my city water by having it tested. I knew it was hard water and higher in tds but figured it was a good idea.

I will add if you google spectrapure site:www.reef2reef.com you can pull up a bunch of posts. Or any target word you want to look up, it comes in handy.:)

My tank is only about 50 gallons including the sump so I would not need very much water a day lol.

I'm 15 so saving money is always a plus but I don't want to buy a piece of equipment that will end up being junky haha

Id buy a spectrapure as a first choice. It comes with everything youll need. Ive not investigated brs but i imagine they are good too.
