RODI vs Distilled Water Maker

Efficient Water Purification: Power level: 750W; volume: 4L/1.1 gallon. This water distiller can distill 6 gal/22.7 L per day to remove dissolved solids, VOCs, and almost all other impurities, offering you the purest water. Ideal for distilling water, alcohol, and so on. Perfect for offices, homes, labs, dental clinics, etc.
I have no i idea where you found the claim of distilling one gallon in one hour. You will need 4 h for one filling.
I guess you won't need a heater for your room anymore, either. What's the price for electricy where you're from.

My electric bill is on average pay. I use AC to maintain 73 degrees throughout the summer. Avg bill comes to 55 dollars a month throughout the entire year to sustain a 2400 square foot home. I am located near a hydro dam.

Manufacturer claims 1-1.3L and not gallons per hour. My mistake, the correct output claim is .34 gallons per hour. So should be a little less than 3 hours to produce a gallon.

For all world outside us it dont make difference.... ;)

And, for europe guys..... It will be even more expensive in following months.... ;)

Is that some weird flatrate you American get. dang, you should start mining crypto.
I am also located near a hydro dam, but for germans it doesn't make any difference.

Easy to forget not everyone shares the same expenses for resources. Electricity varies here in America state for state or city for city. Most expensive resources I paid were in CA and the cheapest here in ID. The same output I use here in ID per month for 55 dollars costs around 600 dollars in CA. Needless to say the cost of living is much less expensive here but so is the avg wages (no minimum state wage).

Someone has to pay for the bright ideas others come up with.... .

In all seriousness natural resources are more expensive in places the resources are unnatural. For example, in the desert cities neither water or water generated electricity are natural.
Kind of annoying the solar guys come here and pound on the door relentlessly trying to sell their solar gear. One of the sales emphasis is to generate electricity by way of solar to sell back to the electric company which in turn sells to other states such as CA.

The filters to maintain the RODI unit are more than a dime. Also, I do not have storage nor faucet type to install a RODI unit. My only option might be the hot water heater system (cold side) in the garage.
Since distilled water from Winco has been working great at this time I'll try the distilled water maker.
Thanks for suggesting RODI is at 0TDS. Any idea what distilled water is at?
The filters are $10 a piece every 6 month. Way cheaper than the electricity you are going to use to distill water. But, hey why do what works, when you can be a crash test dummy.

Yes, factor in the price of RODI filters vs the carbon bags for the Distilled Water maker.
RODI filters for basic system costs anywhere from 40 (generous) to 60 dollars each time.
Distilled water maker carbon bags are 15 dollars for 12 packs.
Someone had pointed out the electricity use which is unknown other than 750 watts for however long at whatever price the electric company charges out for kw of use.
The unit I purchased today on Amazon claims 6 gallons and not 8 gallons a day:

"Mophorn Pure Water Distiller 750W, Purifier Filter Fully Upgraded with Handle 1.1 Gal /4L, BPA Free Container, Perfect for Home Use, White"

  • Efficient Water Purification: Power level: 750W; volume: 4L/1.1 gallon. This water distiller can distill 6 gal/22.7 L per day to remove dissolved solids, VOCs, and almost all other impurities, offering you the purest water. Ideal for distilling water, alcohol, and so on. • Health and Security: Full 304 stainless steel, including the internal tank, inner cap, water outlet, inlet, and all parts in contact with liquid, meet food hygiene standards. They are featuring in CE & FDA certificate, BPA plastic-free container, and aluminum cooling fan.
  • Easy to Use & Maintain: The distilled water machine can be started by simply pressing a button, also with an automatic shutdown button inside. When the heating temperature exceeds 239℉/115℃, the distiller will automatically shut down to avoid excessive temperature damage to the machine.
  • Fast Heat Dissipation: Unlike plastic fan blades, our countertop water distiller is changed to aluminum fan blades to improve heat dissipation. The exhaust cap is also changed from plastic to 304 stainless steel, improving the heat dissipation capability.
  • User-friendly Details: The upgraded home water distiller machine has a unique portable handle on the top, easy to carry. The water container has a large opening and an ergonomic handle for easy access and cleaning. We also provide free carbon packs and fruit acid cleaners without your additional purchase.

Do you bro, who cares what everyone does end of the day its the results that matter not anyone's opinion..., yes I have 11 stage rodi unit and I did what your currently doing for years, I even used the water mill jug filler water for years at a 1$ a gallon, with no major problems, allot of minor issues that may have been from the water but who knows, I can tell you I wasted more time and money doing that than I ever will producing my own water, I can't believe I did that for so long, always driving to get it running out of water the cost at 1$ a gallon. I currently go through about 5 gallons a day in evaporation. I can say I don't replace one component of my filter before 1000 gallons (most parts are way more than that!) at that price I could buy the water wheel, its hard to explain until you've done it, another reason you need to do what you want to do so you can experience it first hand..

Germany already had the most expensive electricity on this planet bevor Putin wanted to roleplay as Kane from Command and Conquer.
That's due to failed politics not scarcity.

In that case the water distiller isn't that bad of an idea. I would still be annoyed to fill in water every 4h, but hey you do you.

Thanks for emphasizing the importance of learning on the journey.....
Happy reefing friend.

Determine your electric rate per Kw and use an electricity use calculator online to determine how much it will actually cost to produce your distilled water for a year.

Let us all know how much money this method will cost you every day and for each year.

Driving to and fro the grocery store I figure has more potential for accidents; therefore, the crash test dummy.
Not to repeat any of the above two pages of reasoning again I'll conclude by asking what the electricity price might be?

I liked how you suggested filters are 10$ 'a piece.' I see what you had done there.

You do you. Hard head leads to hard lessons.

Thank you @rioreef for the suggested resource.

800 kWh × 8.0390 cents (tier 1) = $64.31 (from the electric company).

I came up with 18 cents a day to produce 1 gallon of distilled water.

You get 1,500 gallons out of carbon and sediment filter. DI resin depends on your water treatment facility's process but it will be at least 500 plus.... So definitely cheap than 18-24 cents a gallon. But, hey you got a great idea.

Substantiate your argument, please demonstrate the math. You forgot shipping.
It doesn't work for you.

Will try to slice through the bs. Must admit it saddens me to see any less than the good, courteous advice this place is known for taking place here.
There’s no reason why you can’t use distilled water.
Sure, distilling water uses energy, while an rodi unit wastes a lot of water. Typically 4 to 1.
Some ppl run successful reef tanks without filtered water of any kind. It depends on your water source. Maybe they have a whole house of faucet filtering system for their drinking water and that’s enough. Many of the impurities you filter out are only reintroduced with your salt mix.
The higher the tds in your source water the more often and costly maintaining your rodi unit becomes.
