Not that buying top off water is a “bank breaker” just curious if anyone gets there own? Growing up where I have grown up I know of tons of natural springs, lakes, rivers and streams that I could save a buck or two getting my own. Just curious if anyone else does?

Nope, it’s not that expensive If you make your own. Maybe 5 bucks for 30g. All the hassle is not worth my time.

Would you be filtering the water you get from the lakes and so on? I would still believe that even the cleanest of the sources would still contain things that you wouldn't want to incorporate into your tank. The purer the water you start with, the better success I think you will have in the long term. Stability is key.

Find someone that works in a lab (chemistry, Bioscience, Biotech, environmental).

A fundamental piece of gear for labs is a DI tap plumbed into a sink meant to provide nearly unlimited RO/DI.

Small labs are more prone to having a smaller system usually called a MilliQ.

But any large campus (University or company), will have an RO/DI system capable of 1000s of gallons/day and faucets throughout the buildings.

Find a friend with access and they'd prob get you a 5g tote per wk without even blinking an eye.

I use to have a source for 100g/wk like this.HTH

Yes filter. Maybe nothing to crazy just a sock to get larger particles out. But also heating, most water around me is 40-50 degrees. Just wondering if it’s done before I try it.

Awesome! That’s great information. But I don’t know anyone who has that in my state.... yet.

I have a well, 450 ft deep, and I use a 6 stage RODI unit because I have high TDS (total dissolved solids). Take a sample of the water you want to use and get it tested. Most LOWES hardware stores have free packets you can pick up to send in a sample. You pay to get the results, so it's not really free. LOL There's a good chance you'll be surprised just what's in it. The carbon block in the RO unit dechlorinates the water, but RODI units do a lot more than that: They remove bacteria, heavy metals, and other organics that are harmful to our fish and corals.

I know rodi water is cheap. I’m not worried about that but there is a lot of water around in WA. And I’m near it all the time but if I keep a bucket In my car I can easily grab a clean 5 gallons almost always. So why not? Just curious if anyone else does?

I don't have any friends I'm giving free DI to. :)

The big money saver really isn't the RODI unless you're burning through resin...which can legitimately happen in some cases.

The people I envy are those live by the ocean guys with free saltwater. ;)

I found it more of a hassle to cart water from the LFS to my car, into the house (30 gallons of 5 gal totes) each week. It's SO MUCH EASIER to make my own. LOL

that’s the beach I collect my NSW from....

A decent rodi unit runs about little over $100 and prob costs less than $100 per year in filters. If you are able to install it, is a no brainer.

But no...any water source will have to be processed for impurities which for us hobbyists is RODI systems.

You need a bigger tote and a pump!

Not that my corals are expensive but I would be nervous using straight nsw. If I have access to it, I will run a small tank but then again, is just pain in the butt unless that’s my back yard.

I just buy it from the store by the gallon and or 2.5 gallon. I’m not worried about cost. It’s like $10 a month for me In my 50 gallon. Could be cheaper if I had a rodi unit. I’m just wondering if it’s done. I have access to salt and fresh water. That’s better than most other places.

In your case, it’s kinda of worth it. But imo I would still get a rodi unit unless you go to your lfs to get water and check out there corals lol

I don’t own the property buts it’s public and not far from my house.

i don’t have a LFS. I just figured I hated buying salt all the time so I started just grabbing sea water. Hasn’t been an issue in the 7-8months I started using it. But I still need to top off. Which I buy, but don’t have too....

Sounds like you live in a no mans land, if you don’t work for some secret squirrel agency, I think some of us want to know, just curious.

Never again. I have a water changing station and I'll never look back! LOL
