rodi water not 150 gallons a day

Thought I would look into this again. I have a spectra pure higher end unit. Has an auto flush . Has the two membranes and is suppose to do 150 gallons per day. I have a booster pump installed also which pushes it to psi of 80. Incoming water temp is 41 F. I am only getting like 40 gallons a day.

Thoughts on my issues. Membranes are not the issue. I have replaced those over and over.

What are the stores using to make water production. I need about 400 gallons a month for water changes.. I do one every other week at 200 gallons per change.

If you don't think the membranes are the issue I would bypass them to test what the flow is through the other filters without them.

Not trying to sound like a wrasse @chicago. Are you basing this 40g on a 24 hour period? Mine is not exactly like yours but I get 20g in ~ 8 hours which is all I go for now. But I suppose in theory if I let it run I'd come up with ~60g in 24 hours and mine is a 100g per day unit at a psi of ~70 with my booster.
 
Have you ever replaced the flow restrictor?
 
so more info I should add. I live near chicago. We have good water. Of course the village adds in the phosphate and there other issues so the need for RODI. Basic rule.
Without the membranes the water will flow very nicely.. So yes the membranes are doing what they are suppose to do and restrict and produce water as suggested.. I guess what I am getting at is while the companies that state RODI volume like 75 a day or 150 a day we need to be more clear. I suspect and agree the colder water is probably the issue. I suspect if I push the psi to 90 or more I can get 50 maybe 70 per day. I am installing a neptune flow meter on the output just to see trends.. I realize it is probably not accurate to what I would need and thus will measure occasionally the output for exact figures.

What are the stores using to produce volumes of water.. i have seen larger DI systems. Are they evening using membranes?

This is the first thing I would look at.

@chicago have you cut the flow restrictors to the proper length when you set it up?

And I do agree that the temp is definately not helping you atall. Stores typically use the same or similar systems as we do. I know my LFS uses a Vertex 150 GPD setup. You can get much, much larger systems in the 1000's of gallons per day range.
 
yep.. when i talked to spectra pure.. they actually had me put in a small valve instead of the flow restrictor.. so i can dial the psi to 60 to 70 to 80.. when it hits 90 the plumbing tubes start to dance and shake.. with booster pump
 
ok wait.. tell me more about cutting the flow restrictor to the proper length.. I have not heard this before
 
Spectrapure Membranes come with capillary flow restrictors. They all come in a standard length and they need to be cut to give you your proper rejection rate for your specific systems PSI and temp. Totally lame video lol but it's a crucial step in the setup.

wow.. very interesting.. my unit was set up .. at least I assumed right out of the box.. it was like i said one of their higher end units.. 150 dual membrane auto flush ect.
wondering if there is a difference then between the inline restrictor and the suggestion by Spectrapure rep to install the valve

I do find it surprising they suggested a valve and I'm curious as to the method behind it.
 
the valve is place the discharge waste line. so by limiting the amount of waste water that can discharge you are creating pressure across the membrane and forcing more clean product water to be created. In other words it is changing the ratio of good/bad water. And by doing so increase the gallons per day. The valve to restate the obvious becomes the flow restrictor

My apologies I should have been a little more specific, I understand the valve essentially takes the place of the flow restrictor. I just don't see why they would recommend that over a standard restrictor that's all.
 
The idea was to created a different flow restrictor .. one which restricted more flow. I can dial the psi on the membrane up to 80 psi 85 psi even 90 .. but at 90 weird things happen... tubes start to shake from the booster pump then having to much back pressure.
 
I run 70psi on a 7 stage brs system. 75 with a water saver. I get 6 gallons a hour or 144 a day.

But I have noticed if I forget and leave the flush line on for a hour or so, that will produce the 6 a hour on the next start up. Couple minute flush and flow is a trickle. So I flush 30-60 minutes after my fill now.

I’m sure everyone’s setup runs different. May help.

Cold water makes a huge difference. 70 degree water will be very close to the 150 gallon per day. I still get about 80 with my BRS at 60 PSI. 80 PSI seems high. I do not have an auto flush though. My membranes last 3 years. Is there a way to shut off the auto flush?
