Just purchased a RODI water unit, now looking for a storage container to mix salt in it. Do I really need a food grade poly drum or can I use any plastic drum? Thanks

32g Brute Trash Can from Home Depot.

Or you can be fancy and spend money on large bins. I get what is practical for my setup.

I use a 23 gallon Rubbermaid blue recycling can for my ATO storage and even after months of sitting the TDS is still 0. For mixing new saltwater I have a Rubbermaid Roughneck trash can, not quite as heavy duty as the Brute but it came with wheels and has served me well over the last 15 years. For water change storage I use five 5G clear plastic drinking water jugs and again TDS is never an issue.

If you watch at the different meat processing and or tractor supply stores, you can find drums cheap or free all day long. I use a blue drum that held pig parts for processing. A few friends of mine use cleaned out industrial peroxide drums from the tractor supply store. It is used in bulk for treatment for cattle or other farm animals. Others use the food grade garbage cans and are fine as well.
