Rodi water is a must for the long term health of your tank. Tap water has lots of bad stuff in it.

Your algae problems will get worse every month by using tap water. Won't see a diff in a day,,,, but months you will.
You want to try to do the best you can, and that ain't enough sometimes!

Is the tank a reef or fish only? In a fish only tank, it is possible to use tap water. Also, it depends on the tap water that you are using. However, the water purity can vary throughout the year and can be unpredictable. I would never advise using tap water in a saltwater tank.

Water is the single largest ingredient in a reef tank and everything depends on its quality and its stability. If its worth doing, its worth foing right from the beginning.
Water is one of the few things you can have ultimate control over and for very little money compared to other elements of this hobby, you could easily pay more for a coral colony that what a good reef quality RO/DI unit costs. The average cost of a gallon of RO/DI made with your own system is about a nickle, thats darn cheap and includes both average water and sewer rates, replacement filters and DI resins. Cheap insurance!
