I have a question and maby it's a quick google search away but o well I'll ask anyway.

When did it become known that to have success in this hobby we needed to use an rodi unit?

Like who came up with the idea? And why? How come our fish and corals need to have the highest quality water when the sea is filled with rain water. I understand different organizims in the sea filter out the bad but how did it become known that we need an rodi unit? Was it always known like back in the 70s when @Paul B started or was it something that was eventually found out through trial and error.

It's something I have been wondering about lately and it's just something we all take for granted now.

Thanks

Justin

Im far from a pro, or even an experienced reefer. However, I think its just logic. When you inevitably have some algae/bacteria issues, its nice to be able to cross out your water source out as a possible cause.

And I get that but hindsight is 20-20 and we all know now that we need clean water but who was the first?

The introduction to RO/DI came from the use of RO in house water filtration, became wide spread available in the 80's and early nineties. Understanding of contaminants from tap water has been well understood from freshwater keeping, more so chlorine use in tap since the 60's.

Removing heavy metals and chlorine/ chloramines just makes sense.

Thank you makes sense but was it like an ahah moment when this happened?
