Just setting my system up, the instructions say to flush the membrane for 1 hour on first use, does that mean to use the flush value for one hour or just to discard the first hour of water produced?

Also can someone please explain what the flush value does, as I do not understand the need to flush the membrane every use for 5 minutes before and after use, as it’s the same water being used for the flush so how does that prolong it’s life?

Flushing the membrane just removes all the dust particles from packaging and manufacturing. I have a TDS reader built in that monitors the TDS from the water and TDS after RODI treatment.

Just discard the water, always better to be safe than sorry. What system do you have that recommends flushing it with every use?

It’s called Osmotics, it recommends flushing the membrane for 1 hour before use as it has a food grade preservative coating from the factory, I am just unsure if I need to do that with the flush value open or closed? then to flush before and after use for 5 minutes to prolong the life of the membrane

1st flush with valve open so it washes all that coating away and not thru the membrane

I am assuming open the flush value as you do not want to retain any of that water.

still don’t understand the logic of flushing it for 5 minutes to prolong the life of it.. I have heard people adding another attachment that prolong the life of the said filters.

Maybe another member might be able to give their two cents.

The membrane will screen out particles. By flushing after use, you wash those away before they can clog the membrane

That’s what I’m having a problem understanding, there is a flush valve fitted so I’m guessing it’s of some use?

Flushing before, washes off any particles that might have come loose while not being used.

FYI
I flush my membrane about once a week after making my 65 gallons for water change.
I do not do it before. It makes water every day for top off on its own.

The flush valve should go straight into the waste line. Never into the resin.
With it closed, it forces a portion of water thru the membrane then into the resin chambers.

You should flush the RO membrane before each use. What happens is high TDS water will permeate and settle, so to speak, throughout the layers of membrane. Flushing it before use prevents a high level of TDS water from hitting the DI stage and consequently shortening the life of your resin. If you do not flush it when you turn on the system you will notice the TDS reading coming out of the RO membrane will be high and it takes a few minutes for it to go down. During that time all of the high TDS water is going through your DI resin.

Thanks, I understand it now, I couldn’t work out how using the water pre Di filter to flush the membrane would help.

Yes my manual does say also not to use the first 30 seconds worth of water as it will have high TDS, I guess if the flush is not carried out but it doesn’t state that part.
