Rollermat plumbing

I purchased the Theiling Compact Rollermat but have not yet installed it. The suggested flow is 500 gph. If anyone is using this, are you running it straight on the main drain line or split off to control the flow?

I've seen it both ways. What size tank are you running / and what is the return pump flow rate? A lot of people severely overestimate their return flow when calculating head pressure.

You'd probably be close to 500 gph based on flow meters I've seen on similar set ups. I think it might work fine?

Hey welcome to the club!
I have the same setup except for I went with the clarisea. I put a tee before the 90 were it drops into the sump,
added a ball valve so I can run ether or both. Im still in the build stage so Im not sure how it will go.

Thanks, I’m still in the plumbing planning stages as well. I don’t want to over complicate or have to redo. I think the T is probably a good idea just in case.

Return pump Rd3 is tuned down.
Main has a split, but currently the drain goes 100% trough Rollermat.
Zero NO3, zero PO4, while heavily feeding.
Skimmer is almost useless.

Been running the Theiling or a couple years now. Super happy with it. I have 1 inch main drain plumbed right into the rollermat.


what size is your main drain?

Dont worry about the flow rate too much. The flow rate of 500-600 is "recommended", to get the fleece to last 6 months long. at higher flow rate, you might go through the fleece quicker. My fleece last 3 months before i have to put in a new one

Rollermat works as promised, but like the other member mentioned with less DOC in water, your skimmer all-of-a-sudden might be oversized for your tank. so you'd have to adjust it to skimmer wetter so that operates correctly.
