Rookie mistake

Ok I don't think people really understood what I was saying lol.

I got a tank with fish in it.

The fish got ick so I put the in a hospital/quarantine tank that I filled half with my display tank water and half with new water.

The fish started dying but my fire fish did well same for the Molly.

The Molly was left in to keep the tank healthy.

Some new fish I got died but the Molly lived until a few days ago.

After taking out the dead Molly the ammonia was at 1.5mg/l

And now I have an algae bloom.

Does this mean my tank is cycling. That's the question I need answered :)

Well it's not worded very well. More info please. What do you have in your qt/ht equipment, rock, sand, PVC pipe, etc etc.

Its a 20 gallon with little saltwater decorations(plastic) with no sand. I have a 55 gallon rated hob filter. Only has floss in it. 10% water change every week

If you recently had deaths in the tank and if there's no live rock in it I'd expect an algae bloom, a mini cycle. I doubt it's anything to worry about and isn't likely tied to whatever your killed the fish. I tend to err on the side of caution though. I maintain a hospital tank and if I use it to house anything, I sterilize it afterwards to insure that next time I use it there are no other variables involved other than the questionable coral/fish. Then use daily water changes to maintain water quality. This is just how I do it and by no means is the "correct" way if such a thing exists.

I just don't understand why the ammonia would spike

Well if a fish died in there they would've released whatever waste was left... although it seems that would've been quite minimal. This is a mystery which might go unsolved.

I guess I'll just wait until the parameters become ideal until I can add more fish to my display tank :p

Ummm........ so if the tank just has plastic decor in it then why dont you take it out and clean the tank? The lack of Any rock in there makes it hard to colonize any bacteria. So I would just break it down clean it and refill with New mixed water. NO plants. If you want to give the fish a piece of PVC to hide in. Even if its just a QT tank there not needing any fake plants. Infact fake plants are hard to clean. Thats why a chunk of pvc is ideal.

This is the way Divers den Does all of there fish.

But do what you want its your tank anyway. Have fun

If I fill the tank with new water then I have to completely re cycle everything and restart don't I?

If you use it as a quarantine tank and end up with a sick fish you've in essence got a hospital tank which should then be sterilized... or not

then i would just empty it for now. when you think your going to want a fish. then set it back up and run a filter on your main tank. for a couple days. then use that same filter on your 20. and buy your fish. only use a chunk of pvc for the fish to hide in. check water quality every day. feed only enuf that it will eat . and i would only hold them in there for a couple days. any more would put strain on them and make them more sub ceptable to disease. buy from a quality source and you shouldn't have to worry much.

Just an FYI... I've got a 30g I keep with sand and live rock. I hated the idea of all that empty space. I chose to use it to farm copepod/amphipods. It gives me a place to either isolate a fish that isn't being a good tank mate or a quarantine tank. That being said I've got a good feeling it might end up becoming a stable for seahorses. Anyway just a thought for a tank use since you have space. Like he said if you buy from a good source it shouldn't be a regular problem. I've yet to end up with a sick fish but I'm sure it'll happen someday and then I'll be counting on my pod population to reflect tank health.
