Plumbing my first sump soon and need help!

my return pump has a 1/2 outlet but i was planning on using 3/4 or 1in pipe for the return line.
How do i connect the two different sizes?

Is that what unions are for?

Also there are different types of unions what do they mean and what should i use? Slip/thread etc

Does the return not have other attachments for bigger sizes?
No unions are not to attach the smaller and larger pipes. Unions attach the same size pipes together.
You need a reducer Like this.

Assuming you’re using PVC to hard plumb it, there are adapters to go from 1/2” to 3/4” that glue the two pieces of pipe together.

Threaded vs slip is actually threaded vs glue. For unions in PVC they are almost always glued to the pipe. If you mean bulkheads, that’s personal preference and depends on situation. Any threaded connection would necessitate a male or female thread adapter (in addition) to be glued to pipe... if you can follow that.

edit to add: commonly people use soft pipe to leave the pump, so go from 1/2” barbed on pump, soft tubing, then 1/2” barb x 3/4” “slip” if that’s your desired pipe size.

They do make unions that connect different sizes. Like stated before you can hard plumb(use glue fittings). Unions are generally used for making it easier to clean your sump or adjust things down there. It lets you disconnect it without having to cut everything up. Then when you're done you just twist it back on. You can also use flex piping but the previous options are definitely prefered and more safe.

It can be done, but depends if you want to hard plumped or soft. Assuming your pump is 1/2 threaded. You can ways use an adapter to expand to 3/4. For hard plumped I suggest use a thread x slip union and add a couple 1/2 to 3/4. This allows you to change to 3/4 at the the pump and for the ease of maintenance. For soft plumping, you can use a 1/2 female to 3/4 spigot to achieve your goal

what exact pieces would i need to connect that to a 3/4 return piping?

i guess im having a tough time find what i would need on bulkreefsupply.com not seeing anything for 1/2 to 3/4

Ok use this piece to cover from 1/2 to 3/4 (Image 1). If you want soft plumping, use the 1/2 to 3/4 barb fitting, similar to the gray pvc image 2 attached. Take your pump to hardware or home supply stores. They'll help you find it. for the ease of maintenance, You could also use the 1/2 threaded union (image 3) and male adapter (image 4)
