Are royal grammas (grammus loreto) and chalk basslets (serranus tortugarum) compatible?

Slightly risky, could work, but probably depends on the size of the tank.

Since they look absolutely nothing a like I would be inclined to think they would not be aggressive towards one another. Both fish are initially shy and passive, you might have problems with an long established fish.

Think I'll give it a shot...I'll probably add both at once, too.

I feel like I should know already, but what size tank?

Depending on the tank, these guys will both find caves and "prowl" around them. Pretty docile, so as long as there are multiple places in the tank like this that they prefer, I bet no problems. Should be a great display of personality! :)

Fwiw, in a tank with more aggressive fish, either of these guys might be completely cryptic. Worst case, they might not even come out to feed.

Also FWIW I think in 50+ gallons you can provide this with care during setup...in less than 50 I think it would be challenging or impossible.

I have had both at the same time...both were VERY shy when first introduced to the tank...took a few weeks for each to come out. They didn't seem to bother each other, but the Gramma was definitely more aggressive than the Chalk. Chalk liked to hang out in the upper third of the tank and was a very fast fish. HTH.

Okay. I'm trying for a peaceful-type tank so aggression from other fish shouldn't be a problem. I'm also creating several caves. :)

Okay. :)
