Royal Gramma chalky white front half under blue light

I mentioned in a different thread that I had this weird white film on some on my zoas and I thought on my Royal Gramma also. There was a debate on precipitate vs. bacteria. But tonight when I switched to all blue LEDs, I noticed the front half of the RG is chalky blue-white including a bit over one eye. She’s breathing kinda of heavy. But she ate today like I’ve never seen her eat before. I can’t include a picture because the blue light and the camera on my phone just make everything look white. #reefsquad PLEASE HELP!

How does this fish look under whites only?

She looks like she’s got a fine coating of skim milk under white lights. It’s a translucent white. It’s easier to see on the purple front than the yellow back. I can’t get a good picture of her even with the white lights since she only comes out of her cave for a moment and darts back in. She’s gulping water. There are no little white dots, just this “film”.

Sounds like Brooks... Is the film coming off her? Did you add anything new to the tank or is this a new addition? Do you have any other fish in the system, do you notice anything on them? A picture would really help...

The film doesn’t appear to be sloughing off of her. She was added to the tank on Jun 14. There are 2 clowns, 1 Mandarin goby, 1 Tiger Pistol shrimp, and 5 Banded Trochus snails along with some zoas, a pulsing xenia, a caulastrea, and a GSP. It does kind of look like Brooks but without the sloughing. It’s a very uniform film over her body.

Well, the Royal Gramma is dead. I found her this morning with her head in the pistol shrimp’s cave. She was still jerking a little but her fins and tail were crimped. Just a few minutes ago she was buried at sea. But, she’s not alone. I guess the Mandatin Goby died of a broken heart cause he got a royal burial as well.

Keep your eye out if you are losing fish quickly and it looks like someone sprinkled powder sugar of them that would be Velvet. Without pictures its really hard to figure out whats going on. If its velvet you will have to QT everything Quickly as time will not be on your side. Also will have to go fallow for 6 weeks. Again pictures could really help and they go a long way. Do any of your other fish show any issues?

Thanks Dierks. No sugar. Just a film. She’s been slowly getting sicker and sicker over the last few weeks. The goby didn’t surprise me since he didn’t like any food that I served (mycis and brine) shrimp. He never bonded with the shrimp. The only other fish in the tank are 2 clowns and they’re just as silly, active, and ravenous as usual. The Trochus snails are zippy. And the pistol shrimp is making himself right at home. Parameters are good except for nitrates which were a little high at 20.

I think I just went too fast and accepted livestock that I shouldn’t have. Please don’t say anything cause I certainly know better, but the RG was from my LFS and there was a dead fish in the tank. I know, I know!!! I‘ve given my friends scoldings for years about buyINC from a suspicious tank. So...serves me right.

It’s time to just let the tank stabilize. Nothing new, regularly testing, and weekly WCs. I’ll get it back on track.
