Hi, i got a RG about a month ago, he hid in a rock immediately didnt come out for food other than if it passed right by his rock. I got worried he would waste away but was hopeful after reading some posts he would harden up and come out (he was swimming about happily in the fish shop) but today i found him half eaten.

Is there anything I could of done to change the outcome?

What other fish do you have in the tank? Any aggressive fish in the tank.

Hard to say without more information. Important to know would be what else is in the tank for livestock, your parameters and where/how you got him. Sorry about losing your fish.

That sucks sorry man. I have wanted a RG for years and never got around to getting one. Last week drove to a not so local FS (about 50 min away) and found a very outgoing healthy specimen that was smaller. The second I put him in the tank he disappeared and thought he was gone and I see him poking his head out behind the rocks in the back of the tank and darts out for food occasionally, but I never get to see him enough to enjoy them. Hopefully he’ll come around. Like clowns they are a classic reef fish. I have wanted these colors in the tank too I wish he would come out more.

The only aggressive fish are some very small damsels, i saw one have a pop at him once but at feeding time they would go to the the top and leave the area of rock he was in alone, the tank is 425l system (reefer 425). Paras are pretty stable dont really see any flux and i test every Sunday

Only fluxes ive had are salinity as i wasnt using a ato (just added saturday) but it was only around 3 points.

Do you think it could of been the damsels?

Yeah theyre stunning fish, another guy i know has a larger one and it swims around like it owns the place! I wonder if the larger ones are braver? Like you mine appeared healthy in my lfs but was smaller

I would blame the damsels, no doubt in my mind
Do you think I could put them in my QT tank, try for another RG and add them after a week or so? Or would a larger one help? I added for firefish a few days ago and they hid for a few hours and now are happily swimming around

Did you QT the fish - or buy from. place that did? Royal Grammas are normally pretty hardy and my guess it was eaten after death. My guess he succumbed to an illness - don't know which one. The key is I would watch very closely the others - for any sign of illness. Sometimes - fish collected with cyanide can die rather quickly after purchase - and this may be an issue as well. Sorry for the loss of your fish!

First time RG owner here... Got captive bred from @Biota_Marine... The Royal and a yellow tang were the first two fish in my new tank the the Royal has been very social after getting used to the new tank for a couple days... Now it comes to the glass when I put the pumps in feed mode, is always out and about and only dips into the rocks when startled or at night.

Had to have an illness. The RG I had held it’s own was shy for a few days but after that would hang out freely. The tank mates where blue Chromis, blenny, coral beauty and blue damsels. When it came to feeding time I would say he was the aggressor . Beautiful fish would purchase another one.
