This is my first Royal Gramma, I had no idea that they were den diggers. Is it normal?

Oh ok. I thought that was a Yellowtail Damsel. Royal Grammas have always been a little reclusive IME, but I've never had one dig before. They usually just find a hideout among the rocks and stick to it.

Now that I look at it, you are correct , that is a YTD photobombing :), the RG must have scooted out as I was taking the pic. But it is def the RG digging the den making more of a mess than a sand sifting Gobi.

My Royal Gramma is constantly digging and spitting sand all over. And then he just hide out in the den. Have had him over a year and rarely see him. May catch him and trade him.

I have a rock I drilled a hole in, our gramma lives there mostly. I also got some maxima shells from the lfs, she also likes those. Might be why mine has never burrowed.
My Talbot damsel, thats another story.:mad:

This is a couple months ago. Always out front. Even through all the changes. Only thing different is hes not 1 1/2 inches anymore. Now measures about 4 1/2inches long and about as big around as a quater(monster). I didnt think they got that big.

Completely normal. I have a pair of RGs and the male is constantly excavating their cave and spitting sand everywhere.

Mine lives in a series of holes in my rock, never seen him dig.

Could mine have been doing so much digging b/c he broke out in Ich?? He's now in a 10g QT, along with his tank mates, after TTM and Prazi x2 and doing great. He is out and about most of the day.

Anybody had any problems with Pygmy angels or clowns?
(Mixing with royals)

Can't speak to pygmy angels (assuming Centropyge sp.), but my clowns don't interact with my RG pair at all. Completely different ecological niches.

They dig? Hmmm... RG are on my "possible" fish list but I really, really want a watchman goby/ shrimp pair. If the RG digs would they be incompatible? Tank is 54 gallons in display (and not ready for anything living yet).
