Royal Gramma Jaw issue

Hi everyone,

I was away for 2 days and came back to my Royal Gramma looking like this.

Not sure what is going on.

Fish was quarantined following humblefish methods.

Fish has been out of QT for about 8 months and been eating and acting normal.


Only tank mate is a small clown, it’s in my small Frag tank (which has been running for 2 years). (Yes I know there is some Aptasia).

Any help would be appreciated.

Appears to be lockjaw which happens with these fish occasionally. The make threats with their mouths wide open as you May have notice. Often, they have to release this or in better terms it has to self correct as a remedy. Netting the fish MAY cause it to close but it cant remain long term as fish is unable to eat

I can’t, when I come up to the tank it freaks out, from far I can’t tell for sure but it doesn’t look to abnormal.

Yes, I’ve seen lockjaw in serranids (basslets) from time to time. Sometimes they heal, other times they do not. I’ve tried forcing the jaw back into place, but that may not work.
Is the fish able to feed? I’m guessing not…..

Fish does not feed, I’ve tried to force the jaw closed but it didn’t work. Is there anything else I can do or is it just a waiting and hope it goes away and if it doesn’t the fish passes away?
