Having an issue with a Royal Gramma. We purchased the Gramma in Nov 2018. We quarantined the fish using metroplex, Prazi-pro, and cupramine (all separate times according to Humblefish QT post) along with a clown fish and dart fish. The dart fish did not survive almost immediately contracting a mouth fungus, died during qt. The clown and royal gramma did well and were eating like monsters, ultimately released into the display tank. One thing we have observed with the gramma during QT, he swam upside down quite a bit, but not always. In the display tank, he quickly took to a hiding place in the rocks. Today we have 2 bar gobies, 1 clown, 2 wrasse’s, 1 bicolor Benny, 1 spotted goby, and the gramma. There is also 2 hermit crabs, a fire shrimp, a pistol shrimp, and a Pom Pom crab. The mixed reef tank is 90 gallons with ample rocks for hiding and about 15 corals and 2 anemones. There has been a little aggression between fish as they establish their dominance, but the gramma has not really experienced the aggression during my observations. Generally, I feed the fish frozen mysis and spiraling brine shrimp with a dose of vitality once daily, about a cube a day.
The gramma stopped eating and began to breath heavily about 8 days ago. We set up the qt tank and were successful in moving him out of the display. We observed a white string dangling from his abdomen which upon research can be a sign of internal worms. So I began to treat with Prazi-pro and Metroplex (in food and water). It has been 1 week in treatment with no signs of improvement. The gramma is not eating, swimming upside down behind the pump and breathing heavily. The white string is no longer attached which is about the only positive. The fish does not appear bloated and I have not seen any signs of ich, although he is keeping himself hidden. I have been observing all the other fish in the display tank, all are doing well with no signs of illness.
Any recommendations on next steps or just continue what I am doing? Could the upside down swimming be a sign of something else going on?
