Can you tell me if you think this is tail rot or damage from aggression?

The fish is eating and swimming well, perhaps a little more reclusive the last couple of days. He shares a 130L tank with two young occ clowns, scarlet hermits and Nass snails. I haven't witnessed any aggression between the clowns and gramma. However the larger clown is definitely showing signs of dominance to the other clown.

There was a noticeable difference in damage in the space of 24 hrs would rot act that fast?

Not rot.
Gramma is rock dweller.
Hermit is opportunistic
One grabbed my blue tangs tail at night.
I have since removed every crab.

Thanks for the feedback.

I was away for a couple of days, The damage doesn't look any worse and the fish is still eating, swimming and behaving normally. My only concern is some possible discoloration at the base of his tail. I'll try get a picture up.

I’ve never seen rot that didn’t leave trace “gunk” and that looks really clean. My moneys on aggression
This is exactly why I'd say aggression too. No bacterial residue or signs of infiltration into the scales.

I'll try get another picture tonight I think there is increased discolouration of the scales at the basr of the tail. However last night the he was much more active and out going.

Just to wrap this up he stayed the same for a while then it got a bit worse but now his tail is virtually fully regrown.

Good ending!

Hi, the same thing has happened to my new royal gramma. I suspect it was the yellow tail damsel who was the agressor instead of my clowns. How did your fish do? Did the tail grow back quickly?

No problem eating , mostly gets frozen brine or mysis, occasionally gets pellets or flake.

Same with me a newly introduced yellowbelly/golden belly damsel is acting aggressive although harassment is not continuous, I saw my royal gramma with cracked tail but eating healthy and active.

It looks like someone was nipping, I wouldn’t say it’s tail rot. I’m not an expert though.

Fish come up with tails missing. It's normal part of tank. Get to close to someone's area and bite time. My watchman goby bit my big ole orange shoulder tang 'bull' as he swam by his hole. The tang is 5x his size.
