I recently purchased and quarantined a Royal gramma, beautiful fish, but I've noticed he has some nipped fin's. This did not happen in my systems because all the fish I have are clownfish and banggai cardinal at the moment. Didn't notice it in quarantine because I run the system with the lights off. I did notice he was in a tank at the LFS with a damsel. What should I do? I want to help the little guy out but I havnt seen any natural improvement yet. I love these fish!

My understanding is that clowns are members of the damsel family and can be very aggressive. If you didn't notice it in QT I would guess they are the culprits.

My tank is by my desk and I'm a college engineering student so I'm right there almost all day. I havnt noticed any aggression at all and the gramma swims with the clownfish sometime with no aggression. Unless this happens at night I don't think it is the clown

You can add vitamins to the food to help him heal a little better, but if the clowns are doing the damage it will just keep happening. Better to observe from a distance for a while to see if you can catch them in the act.

I'm currently adding selcon and garlic. Any other recommendations?

I would stop adding garlic. Long term use can lead to liver damage. The Selcon is a good one though. Keep that up and watch for the aggression when your at a distance. If the clowns arn't doing it, then it should heal up just fine. And honestly, even if they are doing it, it's probably the fish figuring out their territories and should die down after a while.

Really!? More information would be great.

I've got both in my tank and the Gramma was put in around 2 months after the clown. He was beating the crap out of my Clown for around a week and it stopped. The Clown never touched the Gramma but that could have been because she was beating the crap out of my other Clown.

Maybe the clown was approaching on the gramma's cave? Anyways, what do you feed your Gramma? What's do they like best?

I feed mine mine New Life Spectrum all purpose formula a pellets. I also feed my tank twice a week with Dragans Reef Blend. It has Cyclop-eeze, Rotifers, Artemia, Copepods, Spirulina, Astaxanthin, Krill, and buffered vitamin c. It goes crazy when I start putting these stuff in the tank.

The reason I ask is because so far all I can get mine to eat is Brine shrimp and flakes( on occasion) worried that the diet isn't good enough to help heal the fins and to remain disease free. I feed my clown NLS. Eats like a pig and Grows like crazy.
