RSK 600 AC VS RSK 300 DC IN 90 GALLON

I have a red sea reefer 350 g2 tank (75-gallon display, 17-gallon sump) and I'm shopping for a red sea protein skimmer. My LFS has a sale on the Rsk 600 AC for $400 and the Rsk 300 DC at $415. I don't know what to get between these two because I heard that oversizing your protein skimmer is bad and the Rsk 600 is rated at heavy bioload at 130 gallons. I'm also planning on adding a refugium too. I will probably have a heavy bioload since I like having lots of fish and corals in my tank with maybe 1 yellow tang or a kole tang.

I would not get the AC version. If you're going to spend the money, get one of the newer DC versions. I would get the RSK 600 DC + ReefRun Dual controller (this is also the one Red Sea recommends).

The DC version of the 600 is too expensive for me. What’s wrong with the ac version?

Aside from the fact it's been discontinued, doesn't have any of the new features and consumes a lot more electricity - no. Don't forget that you still need the extra controller for the DC versions.

If it's solely based on price and you're fine with the RSK300 possibly being a bit undersized, sure.

I have the RSK300 on my RSR 300XL. With a Reefmat 500, it’s more than enough for a 80G (total) heavily stocked mixed reef tank. I have a 600 that was on the tank early on but after about a month or two, I realized it was just too much. It’s sat unused for about a year and a half now. Rookie purchase. Anyway, the AC versions are not silent, nor are the air intakes unless, like me, you run them through a CO2 scrubber and/or outside air (I do both). At this point, the “hum” of the AC pump doesn’t bother me as much as it did early on.

I have a RSK300 in a Reefer 350, it's more than sufficient. I upgraded to the DC pump and dialed it in pretty well. The overskim sensor is very nice. I used to overflow the skimmer and have foam flying everywhere inside the cabinet all the time while I was at work, it would just temporarily over-activate for whatever reason, dump a bunch of water in the cup and overflow. Not a single overflow since upgrade, it turns down the DC pump as needed.
