RSR 170 - Which Media Reactor to start with

Hi there.

I own a REDSEA REEFER 170 and as you should already know, the sump is very small.

I'm looking for a suitable and versatile Media Reactor, since I won't be able to add more than two of these inside my sump in addition to the skimmer already there.

It will be essentially for running biopellets and GFO. I assume I can stick to filter socks when it comes to carbon since I've a low water volume.

I've heard about Biopellets reactor, GFO reactor, carbon reactor, Fluidized Filter reactor.
I've heard that into some you can run all the media you want, in others you can just run a specific type of media.

I can't make heads or tails of all of this, since they all look the same to me.

This is the reason why I need your help with figuring out which one should I go for. Please advise and elaborate the differences, pros and cons between all the media reactors available on the market

Hi, I run the Avast Marine Spyglass small in my Reefer 170 sump. I also have a NYOS 120 skimmer and media cubes. I have run carbon, GFO, and biopellets in it before. Right now GFO. Probably due to my media cubes my Nitrates have always been 0 and once I understood that biopellets primarily lowered nitrates and not phosphates I figured that was pointless. I needed phosphates to be lower so GFO made more since. I run mine off a manifold I added to the top of the sump area with a wheel valve, though I hear the pump works just fine. The nice thing about the spyglass is changing media is a cinch. I even have a ton of pods living in it. There are a lot of good options out there though. I have seen some people use the BRS reactors and mount it on the wall of the sump area.

I have an aquamaxx that I really like. It also has an HOB bracket if you wanted to hang it off the side of your sump

Reactors are very versatile and can be used many ways. Initially mine was setup as a fluidized purigen reactor. I have used it for carbon as well as diy algae reactor. This was all on my discus tank but now that I've gone reef it will be for carbon or gfo or whatever need the situation dictates

Hi, I also run an AquaMaxx mini reactor in my with carbon and gfo in my 170 and it works great.
