Rubbermaid trashcan for salt mixing container

Hey Randy and everyone,

Any chance do you know if this Rubbermaid trashcan is safe for mixing and storing my salt water for my daily water change set up?

The price and size is ideal.

I use a Rubbermaid "Brut" for my ATO reservoir. Any container labled "food grade" will be fine. Not sure about the black ones. Check the label.
Fwiw, the do make a 20 gallon Brut. They are the heavy duty Gray ones.

I've seen people use the 32 gallon version of that. I'd suggest getting a dolly for it too incase you need to move it around.

I've used it too when I had to drain my tank and I reused the water with no issues.

You want to makes sure the recycle triangle has a 1, 2, 4, or 5 in it. And if possible a PP under it. That is for polypropylene. You will find PP more often. The #2 HDPE is the best to find. That is what all plastic storage containers are made of for liquid storage like soda syrup. Good luck.

It may be OK, and I do not know if any reported issues (there are some for Roughnecks) are actual a materials issue or somethign else, but the Rubbermaid Brute cans have a better track record and I use many of them for everything (RO/DI, limewater/kalkwasser, new salt water, sump, and refugia).

I use a 32G Brute Commercial (I need to look around for the triangle).....Just one from Lowes. I use one to store ATO Water from my rodi (then fill up my ato when it needs), and I use the other one to mix my salt.

I've been using the BRUTE cans for a few years...no issues. Not sure about the Roughneck ones...

We use a 32g Brute for moving NSW from the 55g blue barrel into the house for water changes. A dolly will be your best friend.

I just got a 20g Brute to put life in some dry rock/skeletons and rubble in the near future.

For 24 years now I've never even questioned safety of my containers I've bought.
I started with the cheapest garbage pails available and over the years added Roughnecks and Brutes and 55g Olive barrels and to this date I have no indication that ANY of them has ever caused my tanks any problems.
Originally I used them for ageing tap water before use but then added more to grow brine shrimp to adult for my own use and for resale, eventually using them to store water from the added RO/DI in addition to the other uses. OH yes, I DO use them to mix and store I.O. in.

Can confirm bluehawk bent like a noodle, also had an odd smell. Brute is all I use now. Even use one for yard waste and they take a beating.
