Hey all! Is this a good deal?
They have been sitting for years in a garage, but where never treated with copper or any other harsh chemicals.
Thanks!

Yep that’s a great deal. Dry rock (real indo-pacific reef rock) goes for about $3/lb around here. It’s better quality and looks more realistic than all the man made fake rock around these days.

Yeah, but you have to wonder what they’ve been exposed to and potentially absorbed if they’ve been left out like that. Unless you know the seller personally, you don’t really know what they might’ve treated with. Just playing devil’s advocate here.

If it wasn't for the sitting for years in a garage part I'd say the price is good. The thing is that garages have all sorts of potentially lethal substances that could have leached into that rock over time. It's a risk at best. If the seller is a smoker then I'd definitely pass. Personally, I'd pass regardless.

I suppose you could wash them and cure them for a while. Test the water before you actually use them for a display.

No way. Spend a little more on more porous rocks. And do you even need that much??

How would one reasonably go about testing for things like nicotine, exhaust concentrations, petrochemicals, pesticides, etc?

I believe you will save money in the long run by saving up and buyin real live rock out of the ocean. I've had tanks both ways. Dry rock is a headache!
