Running carbon pad

So I'm wanting to run carbon in my sump, but with my skimmer and return pump I have no room for a carbon reactor. Can I run a carbon pad before my my trickle down area in my sump? Or does there have to be a different type of pad before the carbon pad?

That would be fine. Put the bag of charcoal right on top of the bio-balls in the area right below the over flow. Personally I like Chemipure Elite or any other higher priced charcoal. Buy some knee high stockings for a buck and put the charcoal in the stocking, tie off, cut off unused portion of knee high.
