Just curious and probably a silly question, but how do you guys deal with the dust in the air that ends up into a topless/lidless tanks?

I have pretty much always ran a top on my tanks, considering going topless for the benefits, but noticed that I end up with dust and particles in the tank.

I do have 2 cats and I do dust every couple days, its not super dusty, but just wondering how you guys go abouts dealing with it.

Yea, I am just worried about it in the tank period, any experience anything bad from the dust in the air?

The benefits seem to outweigh the down side, but if anyone has had any issues that has came up because of this, I would love to know.

Dust will and does get in the water. Regardless if you have a closed top or not. It's only a non-issue if there isn't atomized particles from house hold cleaners, air fresheners, scented candles, paint fumes, insecticides ......etc. all bad, some way more than others.

Most common dust particles are consumed in our tanks as carbon and broke down by the nitrogen cycle by bacteria. They are removed by skimming, GAC use, filter socks and water changes, as are other compounds and waste are processed. No biggie.

This is the info I was looking for. I will keep my lid for the times that the Mrs. sprays something or cleans the house. She also loves scent candles and what not, would this be a huge problem? Not all the time, but most of the time there is some sort of fu-fu smell in my house from a candle or spray.

They can cause a serious bacterial bloom if there isn't sufficient clean air mixed into the room/house. Especially lots of candles burning.

Some reefers have reported tank crashes from "fu-fu" sprays around the tank. I have an agreement with my wife to keep stuff like that away from the tank and down to a min. She understands. Can be a real problem.

Anyone know a safe type of air freshener or something I can persuade her with to sway her from using these things? Like Ozium?

Thanks for this guys, I was needing of some info to help my cause haha..

Sorry, can't help you with that.

It's seriously a non issue. Just don't directly spray your glass with Windex to avoid over spay but that is it, you will be fine.

Just be careful with "fu fu" around the house. "Fu fu" with supersized skimmer is bad combi, like a ticking bomb right inside your sump.
