Rust And Fuzz On My New Rock

Set up a new tank and bought some figi live rock. All was well until I woke up one morning to a tank with rust color blooming on the rock. A few days later it kept getting worse and now there is fuzz growing on the rock. The tank has been up for about a month now with no livestock. I have had a tank before so know what algae looks like, this is something I've never seen before. Any advice from people that know what it might be or have dealt with it before? Is it algae of some kind?

Well I would fashion a guess that's it's a combination of diatoms and Cyanobacteria. I can see the tiny bubbles on it so that's what makes me believe it's a type of Cyanobacteria. I'm sure you've heard of red slime algae.... Yours is brown.

Looks like the live rock etc is still cycling.

Don't just take my word for it , but I'm sure others will chime in. Just give it some time and keep an eye on your water parameters. It will be fine. [emoji3]

OK. That makes me feel a lot better. Thanks for you advice! I'm open to more if somebody else has the same opinion or even a different because it will give me more comfort and be a more reliable answer.

The tank is cycling a normal process for a new tank....time to add a clean up crew... Snails and crabs...
