Noticed my inverts acting odd and found my heater was rusting from inside and leaching into the water. What can I do to save them before they die off on me? My urchin is doing okish but has slowed down, same with my snails.

Water changes, Cuprisorb and poly filters

Throw the heater in the trash noting the brand. If you don't have many or any acros I would do a 100% water change and put a polyfilter and carbon. Fish will be fine

Yeah i trashed it immediately and used my backup heater for water changes. Im mostly worried about my inverts they seem to be the ones reacting most.

Is this common? I just recently noticed my heater has a rust look to it as well. It still works but not sure for how much longer?

Ive seen there has been multiple complaints, they changed it but there are 2 versions a fresh water and a salt. If you ordered recently or over last year and it says saltwater its likely an ongoing issue. If you message them they will send a titanium replacement. They will need photo proof of the rusting but they send a completely different model but still high wattage

Honestly I wouldnt risk it, the rust was behind and under the cover as well it caused all my inverts but my urchin to die (hes a biggun though)

Oh I’m not risking it. A new one has been ordered already. It was more of a rhetorical question. haha

Ahh ya xD tbh i havent even used the replacement went with the go-to everyone uses the eheims

I’d definitely get carbon in there and do a 50% water change as a first step. 2nd I’d send an OCEAMO ICP-MS which will test for metals and pollutants, but also detect Neodymium which is typically responsible for corrosion of magnets on pumps, frag racks, magnet cleaners, etc. Then proceed from there. If things continue to get worse keep doing water change’s.

Yeah :) this post was from back in March but was a big water change, filters to remove the impurities and a wait and hope. Thankfully it stabilized once i removed the thing. Urchin happy and healthy still just alot bigger lol

I have done ICP tests. No metals to be worried about. Slight readings but nothing of significance thank goodness!

Yep :/ after i had the same issue i went with the go-to for most and got an eheim glass heater havent had a problem since other than calibrating the thing but at least no rust. I still have the replacement hygger sent but i dont trust the heaters anymore

Cuprisorb, carbon, large WC followed by increased / truncated / more frequent WC schedule, and obviously swap out that heater. Sorry you have to go through this.
