Rusty pumps

Why is it, that i read all the time that someone will blame rusty magnets or pumps for their tank failure, but those same people also run GFO which is basically....rust.

Do rusty pumps and magnets really contribute to tank failures?

I don't think its the rust, its the leaching metal that causes the issue.
