Sabella's 450L mixed reef build thread

Great tank and thread. Back in the day I used to go for blues off of Montauk, lots of fun. A quick question, what do you think of the Gyre, I'm having big indecision about power heads?
Gees the blues out there as utterly insane, theyll rip your arms off ha! But what powerheads are trying to decide on? Im not the wave/pulse type of person but i do like the random flow. I run my gyre at 40% alternating along with a jebao rw15.

They will give you a workout. Setting up a 90 g mixed reef , thinking jaboa pp15 x 2 or the equivalant sicce x2, would like to pulse, the sicce have an extended warranty, the gyre is tempting, ecotech would be nice but a little more than I would like to spend- for the difference in price I could get some nice stock. I really like some of the chunks you have and am planning on a frag tank also.

You live in ny? It depends, the jebaos are cheap, and depending where you get them, you could get the pump replaced for free. The gyres awesome but i havnt had it for more then a year yet so well see. I used to use the mp40s but i hate the look of motor on the outside of the glass like that, even the gyre magnet is kind of an eye sore. I stopped using echotech because i had the wetside magnet rust so bad my tank was couldy for almost a week, they were also really loud at the time but im sure now that problems fixed. THE BEST powerhead ive ever owned was a tunze, i had them for over 5 years + never cleaned it, i swear if my tank didnt get wiped out by the hurricane, i would still have them

Yeah -Sandy was bad news, my brother got cleaned out by Katrina so I kind of know what you went through. I grew up around Buffalo and Rochester, spent 8 years outside of New Brunswick in Jersey as a kid. Now I'm hanging out here in sunny Arizona- hot in the summer but you gotta like the winters. Seems like every where you live you have 4 months of bad weather. Thanx for the feedback on the pumps, I'll look at the tunzes but right now I'm leaning toward the gyre or the sicce.

The colors are starting pop on the corals.

I know there getting better and better BUT

Having bit of a problem, how in the world am i going to break the bulbs in. Usually i just burn them in at my lfs but they sold there fixture. Ati was kind enuff to supply me with the ideal way to do it without frying the corals but still, i want them burned + change one bulb once a week. Im going to take some par readings before and after so ill get to see how big of a difference it is. Also MIGHT change the combo

This going to sound dumb, we can't you just purchase a cheap shop light and burn them in away from the tank? tanning bed:D

Lolol you could purchase a retrokit and ballist to burn them yourself but i so do not want to go through all that to burn in the bulbs. I know a bunch of friends that dont burn them in at all, and just toss them in the fixture but i dont see any data that states its bad other then bulb manufactures saying not to

Figured id post this in my thread, someone wanted to know if they can seclude a mature ball of cheato in there display for pods. This little mandarin is the reason why i keep that ugly eggcrate by my overflow. She looks like a blimp lol

for the people that dont already know, not that ive ben having trouble, theres 1 evansi that has not ben "up to plump" for the past 8 months ive had her. She will only eat tiny tiny particals of food, i had to of tryed everything possible. She would always be left out at dinner time and up untill this day felt horrible as she seems to be the smallest of the group.
She always ate frozen cyclopeeze, due too shortage/unharvest of the copepod, i needed a change fast. So i decided to spend the 70$ to get 2 packages of larrys eggs. First time ive ever seen all the fish go absolutely bonkers including my little pal, so i will be sticking to these eggs for now on. Just a quick thanks to @ReefFrenzy for getting this out. Im sure theres a bunch of unhappy fish out there patiently waiting for a tasty treat!

I recently grabbed a pack too. Not that my fish were picky but fish eggs are a great food for all fish. My fish also went absolutely crazy for them. Glad to hear the evasi is eating them!!

She may also be producing eggs to have that round a belly! My girl would plump out like that right before a spawn. So great to see them in that condition.

The eggs are deffinitly worth the money, and the package is going to last me atleast 4 to 6 months. Its also a perfect size for corals. I havnt tryd to gut it yet, i just took a chunk off and cut it into squares sack and all!!lol
