Torch isn’t looking too good. Just got it a few weeks ago to. Ugh. Other than my lobo, LPS just seems to hate me. I have lost hammer, frogspawn, acans and now prob this torch. My PAR averages around 150-175 were these sit and my water parameters seem fine. I don’t get it.

My softies are thriving though. Haha.

Can you share your water parameters with us?
How long has your system been running, and how long with full stability?

Can really help much without some base info.

System looks maybe 2-3 months mature.

Looks like too much flow honestly. I hammer flow on my torch for 3hours a day but this looks too severe for all day and night… just a tad slower on him.

I am still dialing in my dKH so that can swing some each day as I am waiting for things to stabilize now that I am dosing daily. But we are not talking huge swings here.. under .5.

I know my N03 and P04 are a slightly elevated but still within acceptable params I think.

Salinity = 1.025
pH = 7.9
Alkalinity (dKH) = 8.3
Calcium (Ca2) = 426
Magnesium (Mg2) = 1270
Nitrate (N03) = 18.2
Phosphate (P04) = 0.20

I will drop the flow a bit.. I thought LPS, torches especially like flow.. I am running two Nero 5 in a RedSea Reefer 250 G2. I am only running them at 40% min and 50% max though on random with high variance.

So plot thickens. I decided to calibrate the Hanna Salinity checker as it’s been a month since I have done that. After calibrating salinity shows as 1.022!!

Ugh. Will increase. Seems odd though that the fish and inverts seem completely fine.

1.022 is totally fine for fish and inverts… corals not so much. Good luck!

This is honestly the last thing I thought would be an issue. Lol.

It happens way more frequently than you’d think. Several months ago my refractometer was off and I was not paying close enough attention. My salinity went up 1.040. Most corals did not make it.

Light intensity looks low and flow looks to be a little aggressive. The polyps should be waving in the flow and not vigorously and also assure phosphate not elevated and calcium is not below 390

If you’re running an ato it really doesn’t take long I checked mine two weeks ago it was 35, yesterday it was 31 had to bring it back up.

do it slowly... and don't just drop salt in it.
Premix a concentrate in a bottle, and if you can use a doser, dose it over a period of time.

I don't think i need to tell you what happens to livestock when they sit under the return of a super concentrated salt water blast because you got lazy and decided to dump salt directly into the sump.

Don't ask me how i know...

Have you par checked your tank? What lights are you using? My torches sit in 250 par mid tank.

Ok so here’s my plan. I am going to bring my water change supply up to around 1.040. I’ll replace the ATO jerry can with that and keep an eye until I get to 1.025.

Again tank is 60gal and my daily evaporation is just under a gallon.

Thoughts?

You could also do a water change, with like 1.024, about 20-30%...
That would probably help you boost the start a little faster...

It would also help you balance out your minerals like Ca / Mg, and reset some of your nitrates on top.

Assuming the math is right here.. I should be good once my ATO of salt water empties

Salinity is a huge factor. I would also raise the magnesium but thats debatable. I keep mine around 1500 and the euphyllia and brains have been thriving.

I picked up a refractometer today from BRS. Calibrated it, and I appear to be right on the money around 1.025. Yet this Hanna digital checker even after I calibrate it several times shows at 1.022.. hmmm. I am awaiting ICP results today so I am really curious to see what that shows.
