I saw that story earlier where a family got poisoned due to a Zoa. Can you tell me any safe corals and ones I should avoid so this does not happen when I start? Thanks!

There’s not much to worry about, that happened under extremely bizarre acts on behalf of the reef keeper involved in that story. It’s Palys that are toxic I’ve had literally cut my finger open with band saw while cutting Paly frags allowing in to my bloodstream to ever get sick. Normal handling in my 20 years in the hobby and as a professional have never resulted in any harm. I wouldn’t worry about it enjoy Palys and zoas. Unless you eat corals for breakfast or something lol.

Essentially dont boil palys or eat coral and you'll be ok. Well physically, your bank account may suffer though.

I see thanks, are those the only ones that carry this or not? Will I be ok if I leave them out of corals I should get.
I know it is unlikely but I just do not want to risk it. :(

Basically they’re the only ones that ever cause an issue, but in my opinion skipping out on zoas and Palys is skipping out on some great corals. Again don’t boil rocks that have them on it, don’t eat them, and don’t squeeze the juice into your eye and you’ll be fine. Articles like these pop up time to time and it’s always because of some really questionable actions on the part of the person involved.

The one stated they were cleaning the coral or something, I really do like the Zoas but I still don't really trust it and I think it would ruin my whole tank like a boxfish and only bleach can destroy it. Just not trusting. :(
Thank you anyway, so just stay away from them?

I wear clear protective shooting glasses when I handle any coral outside the tank and also wear nitrile gloves. For many years I didn’t use any protective equipment with no incidents but I will not be the guy who lost an eye to a coral in his 30s.

We are saying do not stay away from them, they are fine. If you run carbon like most people do there will be zero worry.

Second what Hemmdog just said! We aren’t at all discouraging or telling you not have zoas and Palys. Just reassuring you that you have absolutely nothing to worry about like by all means get some they make great corals color / hardiness. Nothing in the tank will be hurt by their presence and just make sure to thoroughly wash your hands after handling them (I never do this, but as a precautionary measure if you’re worried). Run any containers used in dipping process or transportation of the zoas and Palys through dishwasher!

So I need to
1. Run Carbon
2. Handle them with tweezers
3. Not boil the rock?
4. Do not microwave them
5. Wear a Hazmat Suit
Anything else?

Omg, I just found out that Corals are Inverts...
And this is the first time I have seen their mouths.
Also, the first coral I would get is a Devils Hand, Not sure why but they are cool. (:

read the same story. The lady broke down the tank. They started to scrub the rocks out of the tank and out of water. They where not being careful.

I see now, also if I ever have to move or transport Zoas how do I do that?
How do I transport Corals and all that stuff?
Is acclimating them almost the same to a pufferfish where you keep them in the water as you are transporting them into the tank?

I pull zoa out ansd move them into the tank. They can be out of the water for a little bit. They may slime up. You just have to respect the coral. Dont brush it off out of water. Dont cut them with out gloves and eye protection. Full face shield would.be better.
