I’m setting up a new tank and will be using a steel stand. I’ll be putting a piece of plywood under the sump , and I’d like to paint it white with something that will help seal the wood in case of spills , but most importantly will be safe as far as fumes from the paint etc.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

When I built my stand, I just used Pro Classic acrylic gloss from Sherwin-Williams. For a Primer, I used their multipurpose primer. Both are fast drying and the finish dries hard. Important thing about using acrylic paint, let it sit for 7 days to cure.

You could even just use something like minwax fast drying polyeurethane, that's what I use a lot.
I've even made my ply bottom like a tray before since I was on carpet, I wanted removable in case of spills, put an edge on it w/ 1x2, poly sealed, held up to spills pretty well.
