Safe to drill 75 gallon Petsmart tank?

FYI petco 1 per gallon is going on . If you really want to drill and your tank is in deed tempered you can pick one up for $90ish but do the test in store to make your the panel that you want to drill is OK.

for HOB life reef all the way. hands down the best. will not flood no matter how many times the power goes on and off will pick siphon back up every time.

Thanks to everyone’s input I have eshops overflow hanging around from an old wet dry filter I had in the past I’ll try using that.

So my wife asked if I’d rather buy a new than use the one I have if I decide to go that route which Eshopps overflow should I go with I plan on picking on up from BRS

Yeah that’s the one I was looking at what would be a good pump to match the flow

Get a PF 1000 that uses 2 drains instead of the 800 that has one. Yes, I have had both.
It is much much easier to tune a box with 2 drains to be quiet.
I use a Sicce 3.0 on my 75 gallon tank.

And the Sicce 3.0 is enough flow for a 2 drain over flow. I was originally going to go with this one and use one drain as the main and one as a emergency drain. Perhaps your set up is different

Yes. Put a valve on the main drain and use the other as an open emergency drain. Then you can tune the overflow so it is quiet both in the front and the drains in the back.

I ran my 75 like that but recently took it down and drilled it and rebuilt it with bulkheads for returns and the overflow. It has no over the top stuff now.
If I can do it anybody can.
PF 1000 and Sicce 3.0 with over the top return

An unrelated question what do people use to cover these tanks I know most people use screens but it seems difficult with a bar crossing down the middle. What brand screen kit is best.

I just got some screen corners from home depot, some aluminum channel and some mesh plus a roller and the rubber strip that holds the mesh in and made one myself. Measure twice, cut once. For my cuts i used a cheap harbor freight hacksaw.

Yeah, there's kits that have everything needed but the screen. I used this clear screen with one of those kits. Unfortunately with the HOB you can't make the frame of the screen go all the way to the back of the tank because the HOB and return are in the way. I made the frame butt up against the HOB and the return and used nylon bolts & nuts to secure some clear pieces of acrylic on either side to cover the open spaces.
